Roofing Requirements

All work involving new roofs and re-roofing work must be permitted. Homeowners that homestead residential property may do the work themselves only if the Appraisal District indicates a homestead exemption. All other roofing permits can only be issued to a registered general contractor.

The permit application must describe all work that is to be done. If decking or rafters are being replaced, you must state so in the permit application. Please be aware that only 2 layers of shingles are allowed on the roof. We will require all shingles to be removed if more than 2 layers exist when the final inspection is performed. The 2018 IRC requires roof structural panel sheathing (OSB and plywood) to meet Table R503.2.1.1(1) which typically requires 7/16 inch thick sheathing.
