Denison, Texas –The City of Denison is launching into 2022 with a bang. Mayor Janet Gott made an official announcement at last Tuesday night’s City Council meeting proclaiming 2022 as Denison’s Sesquicentennial year and inviting everyone to celebrate the significant milestone as the festivities get underway on New Year’s Eve. Denison150, the City’s official sesquicentennial celebration will light up the sky with a history making fireworks display over downtown Denison at 7 p.m. on December 31st. “We invite everyone to step outside and take part in the first of many #denison150 events as we celebrate one hundred and fifty years of history and community throughout 2022,” said Mayor Gott.

The City of Denison proudly invites all Denisonites to join the 150th Anniversary with celebrations, activities, and sesquicentennial programming. Start 2022 off with the celebratory sound of fireworks as you ring in the new year. With a variety of Sesquicentennial themed event tie in’s already planned for 2022, special Denison150 events such as a Birthday Celebration and gala the weekend of September 23rd, community partners on board to help spearhead festivities and foster community pride, monthly themes designed to inspire civic involvement, videos and social media templates to help you tell your story, and finally more than 150 ideas for groups, organizations, businesses, families and individuals in town to create their own Denison150 experience, the celebration is just beginning. The city has developed a dynamic website that provides diverse opportunities for every Denison resident to celebrate the cities 150th anniversary. “We hope the fireworks display excites and inspires everyone to begin planning ways to contribute to Denison150 activities,” said Gott.

The city “gets the party started” in January when Denison150.com goes live, Denison150 social media promotions and graphics for the community to use are unveiled, as well as the first of several special kickoff Doc Holliday inspired events, History in the Hall— Denison150 1872-1922. “Everyone is invited to celebrate our town, and we sincerely hope that many of you will create and start planning your own Denison150 experiences as part of this year’s Sesquicentennial,” said Gott. The city will be making a series of community presentations in January encouraging the community to get involved in this important chapter of Denison’s history. In addition, the Denison150 engagement guide will be available for those interested in helping craft Denison150 for the community.

In recognition of Denison’s 150 years, city leaders are looking towards the sky and cultivating a future that recognizes the past 150 years of vibrant community history. Denison150 is designed to tell the Denison story, cultivate community pride, and leave a legacy for all its residents. The New Year’s Eve fireworks show can be viewed throughout downtown and the surrounding area. Residents are encouraged to view the show from Forest Park, a downtown neighborhood, safely find a nearby parking lot or spot, or launch into 2022 at your favorite downtown business.
