Emergency medical services is a system of care for victims of sudden and serious illness or injury. This system depends on the availability and coordination of many different elements, ranging from an informed public capable of recognizing medical emergencies, to a network of trauma centers capable of providing highly specialized care to the most seriously ill or injured. The 9-1-1 emergency number, search and rescue teams, and prehospital and emergency department personnel are some of the critical elements necessary for the EMS system to work. Because medical emergencies are often time-critical, it is important that EMS arrive as quickly as possible. Failure to do so can make the difference between life and death or permanent disability.
In recent years, fire departments nationwide have evolved into multi-functional organizations; no longer providing fire protection only, but a wide variety of services. While not much is known about Denison ’s first bucket brigade, it is known that it was formed in 1872. The Denison Fire Department was formed in 1876. It was at this same time the first horses were brought into the fire service to pull the fire wagons and hose carts.
