Eisenhower’s Birthday Celebration

Denison’s annual Eisenhower Birthday Celebration kicks off on Friday night at 6:30 at North Texas Regional Airport. The Liberty Jump Team, a non-profit organization that performs at air shows throughout the United States and Europe, will parachute from a C-47. The jump will be repeated at the same place on Saturday evening at 6:30 weather permitting. Visitors are encouraged to enter next to the terminal building.

The World War II C-47 from the Cavanaugh Museum in Addison, Texas, will carry the troops. The Liberty Jump Team are static line paratroopers and are pleased to be back opening the Eisenhower Birthday Weekend Celebration in Denison.

The Liberty Jump Team will also have a static display on Main Street Saturday for this Celebration. Visitors can actually try on a parachute the team wears.

Red River Railroad Museum will have a model ship display as well as a Wall of Honor. Area Veterans and Service Members are featured on the wall with a special panel commemorating those killed in action. The organizing committee hopes this wall depicts the great respect we all have for the men and women who have served our country.

David McVey of Sherman has shared his model ship exhibit and will be on hand Saturday to visit with the public. McVey's Navy will be on display at the Red River Railroad Museum inside the Katy Depot and has US, German, Japanese, and English ships. The first-class exhibit features seventeen ships with the Yamato 1:200 scale and the rest 1:350 scale. He has won blue ribbons at the State Fair of Texas with his models, and they were on display in the George H. W. Bush Gallery from October - January 2013 at the National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg.

McVey's models start out from the basic model kits you get at any hobby shop, and then he adds small details to them. Be it planes, weapons, people, or vehicles, he makes the models his own with these small touches. All details are historically accurate and have been enjoyed by World War II Veterans as well as children. They will continue to be on display through the month of October. Entrance is gained through the Railroad Museum and hours are 11-4 Thursday - Saturday and 1-4 Sunday.

The Perrin Air Force Base Museum will feature three World War II Veterans on staff Saturday. Visit with these special men and hear their stories. Dave Williams flew P38’s on DDay. Colonel B.J. Long flew P39 Air Cobras to protect the Panama Canal. And Jim Ferris was an airfield builder. Having these gentlemen show you around the exhibits at Perrin AFB is an honor and should not be missed.

The I Like Ike 5K will begin at the birthplace on Saturday morning. Registration begins at 7:00 a.m., and the race begins at 8:30 a.m. A fun walk will be held, and everyone is encouraged to come out early to see the reenactors encampments.

The annual dedication of new bricks at the Eisenhower Veterans Monument will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the monument at Loy Park on HWY 75. This year’s ceremony will include a dedication of a Purple Hearts bench, honoring WWII Veterans, and special recognition for the landscaping and improvements effort at the monument. If raining for the dedication ceremony, the event will be moved to the Birthplace at 11 a.m. under a tent.

The Texas Military Historical Society will be bringing both Allied and Axis forces to the Birthplace. These reenactors will be in period dress and will bring support personnel to their encampments. They will be joined by a parachute packing demonstration by Liberty Jump Team, the Red River Valley Military Vehicles and Camp Howze Military Vehicles.  The Grayson County Ham Radio operators will also be at the birthplace along with other activities including children’s crafts.

Attendees are encouraged to take advantage of free parking at Main & Houston. The  TAPS Shuttle will run to the Birthplace as parking is limited there. It will begin at 7:00 a.m. for the run and continue to 10:30.  At that time, the shuttle will also run to the Perrin AFB Museum and to the Airport Terminal.
